Today has to be one of my favorite days of the tier so far. Despite the fact that it was my birthday, today had so much planned outside of long lectures. First of all, Uncle Al again gave us the first talk; what better way to start off the day than with a little self reflection? Values assessment was something that Uncle Al did in a conference he attended during his first job. He asked us to pick 7 out of 35 listed values based on what we care the most about. It was already super hard to pick 7 values because that meant with every one I picked I was not picking 5. Next we ranked them and that was even harder because how am I supposed to pick whether I value time with family/friends more or being content with my job more? Impossible. I like how Uncle Al connected this activity to our personality. He put us into our animal groups, so for me that was the golden retrievers. We literally all chose almost the same ones. One thing we all connected on was picking “feeling needed and appreciated” as one of our values. We also ranked it pretty high. I was fortunate to find out that my values align with my goal of being a pedestrian, so at I least passed the midlife crisis test.
DRx. Gary Jones is a pharmacist who shared with us his career path and other general information about that specific career. It was quite surprising to find out that the employment outlook is expected to decrease by 2% though. I am not interested in pharmacy but it was certainly helpful to hear about other career options. We had a very yummy lunch and while we were in the lounge, the tier decided they would sing me happy birthday hahaha. I love these people so much. By this time, I was overwhelmed and low on energy. I knew that watching a movie was the next thing on the schedule so I was afraid of falling asleep. However, the movie was so fascinating and I was hooked the whole time. It's called Do Not Harm and it is to raise awareness about physicians' mental health during their journey of medical school. During the movie, everyone in the room was so invested because we were hearing things that are directly related to our future. It is frightening to hear that suicidal rates for physicians is doubled compared to the general public. It is more frightening to think about the fact that those thoughts do not end in medical school; many physicians take their own life as practicing professionals.
After a short discussion we were all in need of an uplifting break. What do some of my tier mates decide to do, you may ask… DANCE! When I tell you these people have got some moves. My favorite part was definitely Allen trying to learn the floor smack:
Alright buckle up for this next segment. Hands down my favorite thing we’ve done so far was this activity called “Don’t Put People in Boxes.” Caroline asked us questions like “step forward if you have lived in a rural area” or “step forward if English is your second language.” It was AMAZING hearing snippets of everyone’s story through these short questions. I am someone who has “individualistic” as one of my top strengths so hearing my tier-mates share their personal experiences makes me feel so connected to them. This activity also helps with raising awareness about things we struggled with. We are the future of healthcare so knowing what people from different places of the country or even different countries is vital when it comes to connecting with patients and to offer them understanding and respect.
I went to about an hour of the humpday hangout and played some sand volleyball! My tier kept yelling happy birthday to me and I just felt so seen and loved UGH I love them. I also went downtown afterwards which was super fun!
